A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is more commonly known as a sonographer or ultrasound technician. This profession uses non-ionizing ultrasound to produce both 2D and 3D images of the body. There are many different specialties and ultrasound technicians can specialize in such as neuro, cardiac, vascular and ob/gyn sonography. This profession has a pretty good expected growth of 14.7% between 2021 and 2031. As far as salary goes it can range depending upon the direction you choose to take it, but the range of annual salary is between $79,000 and $101,100. Education Requirements

To become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer it differs on the state but most will require an associates or bachelors degree obtaining science and anatomy courses. However there are trade schools that may give you the certification to join this profession without attending a prior school aside from high school. More commonly you will need to obtain at minimum an associates degree in preferably applied science or health to then transfer to a trade school that will give you the certification to then get a career in this field. 


Work Environment

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers can be employed through hospitals, private offices and medical/diagnostic labs. Your job expectations will not differ much between the different facilities. Some of the job responsibilities include using imaging equipment and soundwaves to form images of the human body to then observe and analyze them. You will be expected to maintain room cleanliness, patient confidentiality, operate imaging equipment in a room or portably throughout the hospital, identify abnormal findings and assist healthcare practitioners. 


Career Paths
Being a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is a great career because there are many things you can specialize in. For instance, you can specifically work in cardiology where you specialize in imaging of the heart. An ob/gyn specializes in the imaging of fetuses of pregnant women. A breast sonographer will use their skills to detect or observe progression of breast cancer. These are just a few of any different paths you may want to take.
